Full internet access appears to have been restored in the Marshall Islands just over three weeks after repair work began on the country's submarine cable.

The Marshall Islands experienced a virtual internet blackout during that time, with access rationed for businesses.

That was alleviated when telecommunications authorities shifted communications to satellites and bought extra bandwith last week.

But RNZI's Marshall Islands correspondent Giff Johnson said the cable was turned back on last night following the completion of repairs and testing.

"It was turned back on and the explosion of Marshall Islanders appearing on Facebook was evidence that the internet was back on and live for most people in the Marshall Islands."

He said it was the first time repairs were needed on the cable since it was installed in 2009, and the completion was delayed after another problem was identified.
