Two prison escapees in Papua New Guinea have reportedly died when they were recaptured in Wewak.

The East Sepik provincial police commander Peter Philip said 29 inmates escaped in the early hours of New Year's Day.

He told The National nine were recaptured but two died in circumstances which would be investigated.

However, Commander Philip said the administration of the prison and the conduct of the post-mortem were outside police responsibility.

The two men were awaiting their National Court trial at the Boram prison.

The police urged the people of East Sepik to keep an eye out for the 20 remaining escapees and advise them to surrender to the authorities.

It was the second breakout from the Boram jail in five months, with nine inmates still on the run from the first breakout.
