Permit granted for Fiji human rights groups to march

Human rights groups in Fiji have been granted a permit to hold a march to mark World Human Rights Day after earlier being told they weren't allowed.

The NGO Coalition on Human Rights said it had been granted a temporary permit by the Fiji Roads Authority to march between 9am and 10am on Saturday 10 December from the Flea Market to Sukuna Park in central Suva.

The organisation's interim chairperson Michelle Reddy said her group was ecstatic but she said it was still waiting for the police to approve the decision.

The Roads Authority's chief executive John Hutchinson earlier said the application had been declined twice because of the potential congestion it would cause in Suva's CBD.
