Fiji PM plays down tensions in Auckland speech

Fiji's Prime Minister has given his first speech in New Zealand since being elected in the 2014 election.

Frank Bainimarama thanked New Zealand for its help in the wake of Cyclone Winston, but blamed this country's media for exaggerating the tension between the two countries.

Frank Bainimarama said he gets on famously with John Key and he is Frank by name and frank by nature.

That's despite his strong rebuke last month after Mr Key warned him not to be silly, when Fiji police arrested and detained prominent Fijians for attending a meeting.

Mr Bainimarama told investors Fiji is open for business and also welcomed all journalists to report there, after lifting long-term bans on some.

However he won't be fielding any media questions here.

He'll be officially welcomed at Government House on Saturday and will later attend the Bledisloe Cup rugby match at Eden Park.
