Work is set to begin on nine schools in Fiji that were awarded the first batch of tenders after Cyclone Winston.

The government has allocated 63.6 million US dollars in this year's budget, and is also relying on international donors in the Adopt-a-School programme.

Last month, Australia sent out requests for tenders for the design, repair and reconstruction of 85 school buildings in the Western Division.

Fiji Village reports the permanent secretary for education, Iowane Tiko, sent a circular letter confirming work will begin in the summer holidays, which start on November the 26th, and run to January the 16th.

The government has promised to publish the other tender approvals for remaining schools by November, and the Ministry says it wants most of them built by the January 16 start date.
