Ship sinks in CNMI harbour

3:28 pm on 5 October 2016

A Northern Marianas island freighter has sunk while entering Tinian harbour.

The vessel, which is owned by a grocery company with outlets in Saipan and Tinian, was carrying about two tonnes of goods for the island.

It sank as it was being towed into the Tinian port.

It had earlier lost power and when this happened it drifted and struck the breakwater leaving a gaping hole in the hull.
