Papua New Guinea's opposition leader, Don Polye, appears to be leading in a recount in his Kandep constituency.
The recount of ballot boxes from the 2012 election in the Kandep district was ordered by the Supreme Court after a stalled trial and a series of appeals by the runner-up, Alfred Manase.
Mr Manase claimed the 2012 election process was unfair because of Mr Polye's influence over the former Electoral Commissioner and the local returning officer.
When counting finished for the night on Sunday, Mr Polye was leading Mr Manase by more than 5,000 votes.
Counting will resume today, with an official result expected to be announced some time this week.
Meanwhile, Mr Polye has called for calm with reports of large crowds gathering outside the counting venue in Enga province.
