A recount in the electorate of Papua New Guinea's opposition leader, Don Polye, will begin today, after it was deferred late last week.

The recount of ballot boxes from the 2012 election in the Kandep district was ordered by the Supreme Court after a stalled trial and a series of appeals by the runner-up, Alfred Manase.
Mr Manase claimed that the 2012 election process was unfair because of Mr Polye's influence over the former Electoral Commissioner and the local returning officer.
The provincial police commander, George Kakas, said the recount was deferred to today after Mr Polye's supporters staged a protest march.
He told the Post Courier that Mr Polye, Mr Manase, their lawyers and independent scrutineers are expected to be present during counting.
Meanwhile, Mr Kakas said one person has been arrested after a classroom at the counting venue was burned down last week in a suspected arson.
