Fiji hardware company sending supplies 'on every ship'

One of Fiji's biggest hardware companies says the Government's Help for Homes initiative is tracking well and materials are being sent out as quickly as possible.

The manager of RC Manubhai, Oscar De Mel, says his company is delivering wood, roofing iron, tools and concrete to mainland villages for free, while the government is paying for all transport to the outer islands.

He said RC Manubhai originally paid for outer islanders to visit Suva, where they collected their government funds and came shopping for building supplies.

"Because sometimes we found that they don't have the money, bus fares, they don't have, maybe they must take a loan. So we thought OK, we will help them in a different way before they come to the business."

Oscar De Mel said materials are being sent on every ship that sails, and although he would like supplies to arrive more quickly from overseas, he understands the demand is unusually high.
