A former worker in Fiji's ministry of finance has been sentenced to four years in prison after being found guilty of abuse of office.

Iliesa Waqavonovono was also charged for falsification of documents and obtaining financial advantage by deception.

FBC reports the 24-year-old pleaded guilty to the charges.

The court heard that between January and August 2015, while being employed as a clerical officer at the Ministry of Finance, Waqavonovono falsified three cheques he received on the ministry's behalf and used for personal purposes.

The amounts were the equivalent of almost $28,000 US dollars.

He received a four-year sentence with a three-year non-parole period.
