Cooks purse seine report nears completion

A select committee in the Cook Islands is finalising a report on issues raised about the purse seine fishing in the country's exclusive economic zone.

The committee, headed by finance minister Mark Brown, was formed last month to try and solve the grievances of petitioners, who are largely opposed to a purse seining agreement with the European Union.

It has spent the two weeks holding meetings with stakeholders and considering submissions, some of which said the country should not enter into any more licences, and refuse to renew others.

Mr Brown says the committee's secretary was now drafting a report that it would then go through paragraph-by-paragraph, before submitting a final report to parliament.

He says he hopes it will be ready by the end of next month.
