Cook Islands MP Teina Bishop has been found guilty of corruption as a minister of the Crown in the High Court today.
It's likely Bishop, who is leader of the opposition, will appeal the decision.
The former cabinet minister had been on trial following a police investigatiion into allegations of suspect dealings between him and foreign fishing company Luen Thai when he was minister of marine resources.
Bishop allegedly received a loan from Luen Thai's subsidiary Century Finance, and a link had been made between this and the granting of 18 fishing licenses to Huanan Fishery.
Under Cook Islands law, a minister of the crown who corruptly accepts or attempts to obtain, any bhribe for himself or others can face a maximum sentence of 14 years in prison.
