A teenage pilot is due to land in American Samoa shortly, in an attempt to become the youngest person to fly around the world in a single engine aircraft.

The eighteen year old Australian Lachlan Smart started his trip in Queensland on July 4.

He plans to spend the night in the American Samoan capital, Pago Pago, before heading further east to Christmas Island and Hawaii.

American Samoa officials says the flight is scheduled to land around 2:30 pm local time.
