The Vanuatu Meteorological Service says its new cyclone map will help people understand cyclones better.

The new tracking maps use numbers and the alphabet instead of latitude and longitude, and includes drawings of the potential impact of the cyclones.

The Service's William Worwor says it will make it a lot easier for those people with poor literacy skills.

One of the reasons why we have the tracking map is to simplify the technical information that we use from our technical point of view. That's why we have the sketches, images of the land and wind as well.

William Worwor says hopefully the new map will lower the number of people who call the Met Service to check information during the cyclone season.
