Fire at Nauru camp linked to suicide attempt

7:51 pm on 25 May 2016

The fire that gutted a unit in a Nauru refugee camp earlier this week was part of a suicide attempt, according to the victim's husband.

The Iranian woman was rescued from the burning unit and given oxygen at Nauru hospital.

The Australia-based Refugee Action Coalition reports that the husband says his wife had suffered depression for a long time and had made previous suicide attempts.

Meanwhile a protest at Nauru's family compound over the treatment of asylum seekers and refugees on the island has now entered its 67th day.

Another protest at the single men's camp is in its 28th day.
