A Tongan village now has access to clean water following a grant from Japan to restore the supply.

Matangi Tonga reports the 731 residents of Puke village on Tongatapu have been asked to maintain the system with care, following the recent upgrade.

The Japanese Ambassador to Tonga, Yukio Numata, was at the village to commission the revamped supply and said it would become the basis of further development in Puke.

In 2005 the piping system was installed with Japan's help, and now it has solar-powered units and new water tanks.
