Marshalls pension fund on brink of collapse

Marshall Islanders have been told their pension fund is just a few years away from collapse.

The retirement fund administrator, Saane Aho, said the Marshall Islands Social Security Administration was in a 'very serious crisis', which started seven years ago.

She said there would be a $US7 million deficit this year, and for a range of reasons the fund was drawing from its trust fund at unsustainable levels.

Saane Aho says if no action is taken the fund will be bankrupt by 2023.

Cabinet Minister Mattlan Zackhras spoke to a pension workshop on Friday, with President Hilda Heine, MPs and monetary experts.

He said it was time for action in order to avoid certain disaster.
