The governor of the Northern Marianas, Ralph Torres, has accepted the resignation of a Homeland Security adviser Edward Deleon Guerrero who was arrested and charged for sexual abuse of a minor.

The governor also warned that he would not hesitate to act if other officials were involved in the scandal as purported by rumours swirling on Capitol Hill.

While acknowledging that Mr Deleon Guerrero was innocent until proven guilty by the courts, Mr Torres said cabinet members, lawmakers and others in the executive held ethical obligations to the community.

Mr Deleon Guerrero and a police officer Jesse Salas Concepcion are each facing five criminal charges for having sex with a 15-year-old girl.

The two reportedly confessed to an FBI agent about their sexual encounters with the girl, who they said they didn't know was underage.
