The Nauru government says a report about the Australian bank Westpac cutting ties with it is misleading.
RNZ International understands Westpac has written to Nauru's government asking to end their years-long relationship over several concerns, although it is not clear what these are.
A spokesperson for Westpac in Australia declined to eloborate, citing customer confidentiality.
But in a statement, the Nauru government said the facts were very different from what it called a fabricated story, accusing the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, which also reported the Westpac story, of interfering in Nauru's domestic affairs.
It said Westpac withdrew services not only to Nauru but nearly all Pacific small island states.
At the beginning of last year, Westpac said it would seek to sell its business in Samoa, Cook Islands, Solomon Islands, Vanuatu and Tonga to Bank South Pacific.
However, it made no mention of Nauru.
Nauru also said since June 2015, Bendigo Bank had become pivotal in the lives of all Nauruans.
