Fiji trying to contain conjunctivitis spread

Fiji's Ministry of Health is trying to stop the spread of conjunctivitis after hundreds of people around the country were infected with the eye virus.

The ministry has advised those who have contracted the contagious condition to rest and refrain from travelling and attending social functions.

The ministry's permanent secretary, Meciusela Tuicakau, said infected people should not share towels, pillows or bed linen, and cold compresses should be applied over closed eyes.

He said because of a risk of developing a secondary bacterial infection people could use certain eye drops such as chloramphenicol to assist in stopping the virus's spread.
