Police in New Caledonia have launched an operation in the Noumea suburb of Saint Louis to detain suspects behind recent lawlessness.

According to the local newspaper, 40 officers have been deployed to detain a group of young men responsible for break-ins in the area.

Last week, police were shot at and had stones thrown at them in two separate incidents.

Police had shots fired at their armoured vehicle when they moved in to recover a stolen car.

In a separate incident, policemen went to the scene of a burning car when guns were fired in their direction.
