Prisoners have been deployed around Fiji's Viti Levu to assist with the clean-up operation after Cyclone Winston.

The government said this will help in the rehabilitation efforts.

Prisoners are being used in Ba, the coastal areas of Tailevu and prisoners from Lautoka have been employed in Rakiraki to help re-beautify the town.

Their supervisor, Lepani Tuikenawa, said the prisoners have been through a vetting process and have good behaviour reports.

"Yeah, they have already gone through programmes for rehabiliatation. That's why they came here. They have proven themselves that they can (have) access to the public."
