Polynesia submarine cable talks in New Zealand

7:59 am on 1 February 2016

Talks are to be held in New Zealand this week about submarine cable developments for internet communication in Polynesian countries.

The meeting is an initiative of the government of New Zealand, and will engage the leaders of the Cook Islands, French Polynesia, Niue and Tokelau.

The Cook Islands Prime Minister, Henry Puna, will be joining to discuss the prospects of connectivity to a broadband submarine cable.

The Cook Islands government had a keen interest in submarine cable developments for internet communications, and considered various options over recent years.

A small team of New Zealand consultants recently visited Rarotonga and held talks with a number of parties, including the private sector.

Other parties of interest, including the ADB, will also be present at the discussions in New Zealand.
