Vandalism ends postal service in New Caledonia town

4:10 pm on 26 January 2016

New Caledonia's postal service has decided to close its office in St Louis near Noumea for security reasons.

The territory's public broadcaster says the decision was taken following the latest act of vandalism at the end of last week.

A post vehicle was vandalised, and letters and parcels were stolen.

Residents of St Louis have been advised to pick up their mail in nearby Boulari.

St Louis has frequently been the scene of unrest, affecting road links to the towns south of Noumea.
