American Samoa retirement fund head fired

4:37 pm on 22 January 2016

The American Samoa Retirement Fund executive director, Luatua Filisouaiga Taafua, has been fired amid a police investigation.

Its chairman, Vaanatiu Toafala Iafeta, confirmed the board reached a decision and a letter of termination was delivered to Luatau.

Luatua was sent on leave with pay in last July while under investigation for alleged misappropriation and abuse of Retirement Fund monies.

Vaanatiu says the board has not yet received a copy of the investigation report of Luatua.

But he says it has been guided by statements made by the Commissioner of Public Safety that the investigation established probable cause to believe crimes were committed.

Luatua has headed the Retirement Fund for nine years.
