The French Polynesian president, Edouard Fritch, says for the time being February 22 and 23 have been earmarked for the visit.

He says more will be known once the French High Commissioner returns from his visit to Paris.

Last May, a French government minister said Mr Hollande might visit French Polynesia before the end of this year.

The last French president to visit Tahiti was Jacques Chirac in 2003.

His successor, Nicolas Sarkozy, was due to visit in 2008, but the trip was first deferred and then cancelled.
