American Samoa economy flat

The Chairman of American Samoa's Chamber of Commerce says the territory's economy this year has been flat, with only two new investments providing jobs.

David Robinson has criticised the government, saying there's been a lot of talk about new investment and opportunites for the territory, but not a lot of results.

"2015 as we know has been a situation where for the most part, the economy has remained flat. Unemployment remains high. Disposable incomes remain low and there's been no significant new investment in the territory."

David Robinson says the establishment of the Samoa Tuna Processors cannery was one of the new investments this year that provided jobs.

Mr Robinson says this year, the cannery and fishing industries also faced problems with federal regulations which added to their rising cost of doing business in the territory.
