The Yap state government has reminded concerned citizens of the Federated States of Micronesia that a plebiscite is required to terminate the Compact of Free Association with the United States.

This comes after members of the FSM Congress asked the President Peter Christian to end the Compact by 2018.

The Compact covers the four states of Chuuk, Kosrae, Pohnpei and Yap.

The resolution states the US abused its majority through the Joint Economic Management Committee to force through policies that differed from FSM interests.

It pushes for what is described as full sovereignty for the FSM and allow negotiations and dealings with other countries.

Under the Compacts of Free Association, people from the Freely Associated States - FSM, the Marshall Islands and Palau - are able to migrate to the US for employment, health or educational services.
