Sixty families from Bougainville have been taken to Papua New Guinea's East New Britain province to visit relatives in jail at Kerevat.

New Dawn FM reports the families travelled on MV Chebu courtesy of the International Committee of the Red Cross and local Red Cross branches.

As part of its humanitarian mandate, the ICRC visits people in jail to ensure they are treated humanely and with dignity.

The ICRC has been organising the jail visit every two years since 2011.
