Medical team visiting Papua to look into infant deaths

Indonesia's health minister has sent a team to Papua to investigate reports of over 30 infant deaths since October.

Nila Farid Moeloek told the Tempo news agency that she had reports of 31 children under two years old dying as a result of fevers, convulsions and diarrhea.

She says the reports need further investigation as they are not accurate enough.

The Jakarta Post reports the team of epidemiological experts was sent to Nduga regency, taking six to seven hours on foot to reach the village in difficult terrain.

The director general for disease control, Muhammad Subuh, says while it's hard to predict the cause, he says malaria could be a likely one.
