Sport: Guam's World Cup hopes ended by Iran

12:37 pm on 18 November 2015

Guam's Football World Cup qualifying hopes are over after a 6-0 loss to Iran in Dededo last night.

It was the Matao's first loss on home soil during the qualifying campaign and fifth match in a row in which they had failed to score a goal.

The result moves Iran three points clear at the top of Group D in Asian qualifying after Oman were beaten 2-1 in Turkmenistan.

Guam is seven points adrift in fourth place, with one match remaining against Oman in March.

The top team in each group and four best runners-up advance to the next qualifying round and also qualify for the 2019 Asian Cup.

The next best 24 teams will reach the final playoffs round for the Asian Cup, with a top four finish enough for the Matao to advance.
