SPC to present its prioritising strategy to members on Niue

The members of the Pacific Community are to be asked to back a strategy focussing on the regional agency doing less.

The 9th Conference of the Pacific Community starts on Niue on Saturday when officials meet ahead of ministers from the 26 member nations and territories.

The director general of the Secretariat of the Pacific Community, Dr Colin Tukuitonga, says the ministers will need to consider a declining budget and a new strategic direction.

He says the SPC's current approach, of a wide range of services, is not sustainable.

"We have to focus on the priorities because the money just isn't there and it will continue to get less and less, and we can't continue to let the members believe that the SPC will continue to do what it has always done. So this raises a very difficult question of how do you prioritise."
