Amnesty International is calling for an independent investigation into past abuses in Fiji, following the decision by the public prosecutor to charge five men linked to severe physical abuse caught on video.

Four people including three police officers were in court yesterday on sexual assault charges, with the case being adjourned until next Wednesday.

Amnesty's Pacific coordinator Rebecca Emery says they have received multiple reports of Fiji's security forces using torture and investigation must continue.

"There have been reports of all sorts of situations over the years so it would be good to see all of these cases looked into, and given the same treatment as this one "

Rebecca Emery says the court case comes three years after the video was made.

One of the five suspects, Pita Matairavula, is still at large.
