Depression near Fiji could develop into cyclone

Forecasters in Fiji says a tropical depression developing to the northeast of Rotuma has a moderate to high probability of developing into a tropical cyclone this weekend.

The director of the Fiji Meteorological Service, Ravind Kumar, says the public should prepare for severe weather and monitor forcasts as the system moves south tonight.

The Fiji Times reports a heavy rain alert has been issued for eastern Viti Levu, Vanua Levu, Lau, Lomaiviti, and the Yasawa Group.

A strong wind warning is also in force for most of the country.
