Niue youth dive into langauge week

An Auckland community leader and teacher says Niue youth in New Zealand are getting behind the Niuean language week in an unprecedented way.

This week has been themed 'Niue People, Niue Families, Use Vagahau Niue' and features church services, book readings, cultural exhibitions and feasts.

Nora Douglas says in the past the community struggled to get buy-in from the younger generation, but that has changed, with youth and university groups getting involved this year.

"It's always been in there hearts but I think it has been hard to come out, but I think as more of as adults are getting into it and encouraging and nurturing, I think that is what's bringing them all on board as well. Also acknowledging their attempts to use our language rather than laughing at them."

Ms Douglas says with a dwindling population on Niue it is even more important for the overseas community to keep the language alive.
