High Court date for suspended Fiji MP

2:08 pm on 30 September 2015

A Fiji MP who was suspended from Parliament for two years in May will have his appeal to the High Court heard in December.

Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu was referred to the privileges committee after he made slurs against the speaker during a constituency meeting.

The leader of the opposition, Ro Teimumu Kepa, filed a High Court constitutional challenge of the decision in July.

She says Parliament and the Speaker acted outside their respective legal powers in citing and suspending Ratu Naiqama for contempt.

The Fiji Times reports the High Court hearing is set down for December the 15th, before Chief Justice Anthony Gates.

Ratu Naiqama is seeking declarations that the Speaker contravened the Constitutional Bill of Rights and chapter two of the Constitution.
