Dozens still in shelters on Saipan after Soudelor

One month on from Typhoon Soudelor, 181 people remain at three shelters on Saipan in the Northern Marianas.

The island was battered by the typhoon, causing extensive damage and leaving hundreds homeless.

The Department of Community and Cultural Affairs says the 181 are housed in three centres on the island, with the Red Cross and the Federal Emergency Management Agency continuing to provide help.

Meanwhile there are complaints on social media that FEMA is denying aid to some people because they are not U.S. citizens or are not carrying green cards.

The Governor Eloy Inos has acknowledged there have been multiple cases in which people have been denied compensation for damage to their houses.

FEMA had said earlier people who are not U.S. citizens may be eligible for its assistance.
