The sport division of Kiribati's Ministry of Women, Youth and Social Affairs, says the country is close to having its first ever sport policy.
A sports officer with the Ministry, Willy Uan, says the policy, due to be endorsed within the next two years, will be the first road map for Government on how to develop sport in a country which is dominated by its young population.
The President of the Kiribati National Olympic Committee, David Collins, says such a policy is long overdue.
He says the heart of the policy should be athletes and nothing more, and he hopes it will ensure there is no political interference in the sector in the future.
