Papua New Guinea and American Samoa made a winning start to the Oceania Cup rugby competition at the weekend.

Hosts PNG outclassed Tahiti 32-10 at Sir Hubert Murray Stadium in Port Moresby, with American Samoa beating Solomon Islands 30-15.

American Samoa are attending the Oceania Cup for the first time, while Papua New Guinea are hoping to go one step better than their runners-up finish two years ago.

Defending champions Cook Islands are not in PNG, choosing to focus their energies on their sevens programme.

The next round of matches is on Wednesday.
