More than 200,000 people in Papua New Guinea's Enga have been hit by what is being described as the worst frost disaster in the province in more than 40 years.

The Enga Administrator, Samson Amean, who called an emergency meeting yesterday with the provincial disaster and emergency committee said entire food gardens have been destroyed, especially in Kandep district.

The Post Courier reports Mr Amean says that people are packing up to move to other areas to seek food and shelter.

Mr Amean says the province is also feeling the effects of the prolonged drought and the frost simultaneously.

He says this means they are facing both a shortage of water, and garden food, if the current drought and frost continues over the next two weeks.
