Eight people were interviewed by an independant panel, with 29 having initially applied for the vacancy.

Among the candidates is interim coach Fata'ali'i Milovale, former Fijian sevens great Waisale Serevi, former Manu Samoa international Muliagatele Brian Lima, and 2010 World Series winning playmaker Uale Ma'i.

SRU Chief Executive Officer Faleomavaega Vincent Fepuleai says the main goal is qualifying for next year's Rio Olympics.

"There's a whole lot of sevens tournament on locally over the next few months and the players who have actually been working in the high-performance unit are still in condition at the moment. Hopefully the person who will come on board will have a look not only at players in Samoa but players who are willing to put their hand up who are on contract overseas."
