Fiji plans to introduce cadet training in schools

8:17 pm on 15 July 2015

Fiji's Youth and Sports minister is planning to include cadet training in all schools and youth training centres.

The minister, Laisenia Tuitubou, says cadet training will ensure Fiji's young people gain the values required to address social issues.

Mr Tuitubou says they are re-emphasising the discipline due to young peoples' changing attitudes and training will strengthen their character.

Cadet training is already underway in some secondary schools.

The Fiji military's land force commander, Colonel Sitiveni Qiliho, says the secondary schools involved in have been approved by the education ministry.

"The cadet training that is conducted in schools is to encourage discipline, team work and those values, rather than preparing them to join the military."

Colonel Sitiveni Qiliho says it was the first he had heard of a plan to introduce cadet training in all schools.
