Papua New Guinea's football coach Ricki Herbert says his team still has everything to play for at the Pacific Games and Olympic qualifying tournaments in Port Moresby.

Former All Whites coach Ricki Herbert has been appointed coach of the Papua New Guinea Under 23 squad which will contest the Pacific Games in July.

The home side were left ruing missed opportunities in Sunday's 1-0 defeat to New Zealand at Bisini, with Herbert saying they should have won the match.

PNG remain winless after two games but thanks to an unusual draw face a simple equation in today's final group match.

"We just need to get a point then we're in both semi finals. The abnormity of the group - New Zealand can't got to the South Pacific Games and New Caledonia can't go to the Olympics - so if we can get a point off the Solomons then we will play in both semi finals," said Herbert.

"From what I've seen it certainly builds my confidence after our performance today that, no matter who we play, I think we're going to be very competitive and I wouldn't say that's always been the case with PNG."

Meanwhile, the New Zealand football coach Anthony Hudson said he would rest players for today's final group match against New Caledonia at the Olympic qualifying tournament.
