Repairs after an unseasonal storm to the Marshall Islands' main atoll of Majuro may take months to complete.

On Friday, a tropical depression brought high winds and surf battered the shores around the atoll, with fishing vessels and yachts breaking off moorings and slamming into the shore.

The winds also blew off roofs, knocked down trees and caused power outages.

Our correspondent on the Marshall Islands, Giff Johnson, says there's a big cleanup ahead.

"Fixing sea walls and people's housing, that will be ongoing for a while, but a lot of the cleanup work is actually quite well in hand, and I think it will be some weeks or months maybe before people rebuild and get everything back to where it was."

Giff Johnson says initial reports suggust other atolls weren't as badly affected.

Concerns that Enewetak Atoll could be hit have now eased.
