A massive landslide has hit a remove village in Papua New Guinea's Western Highlands province, burying six homes and destroying food gardens.

The Post Courier reports that no lives were lost in the landslide, which struck the village of Lapure in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

A local magistrate, Albert Ake, says the villagers managed to flee to safety after they heard the rumbling of the rockfall, and those who lost their homes are trying to find their valuables in the debris.

Mr Ake says the landslip has damaged many properties and food gardens which the community relies on, and he's called on the local MP, Bejamin Poponawa to assist those affected.
