Sport: Fiji goalkeeper good enough for pro deal

10:37 am on 30 June 2015

Fiji may have suffered a narrow loss against Wellington Phoenix at the weekend but their players have already been tipped for higher honours.

Goalkeeper Akuila Mateisuva was impressive between the sticks on Saturday as the Phoenix beat dominated the possession stakes in a 2-1 victory at ANZ Stadium, in front of 12,000 fans.

The President of the Fiji Football Association, Rajesh Patel, says his performance did not go unnoticed.

"Ernie Merrick when I talked to him he said your goalkeeper has an excellent opportunity to play for any A-League team. Presently he has got three keepers with him [at the Phoenix] but he said he can play for any A-League team and that was a great opportunity for us too, to see where we can put our players in professional leagues and other overseas clubs so they can enhance their career and further up their footballing career, which helps Fiji Football in the long run too".

The Phoenix and Fiji teams wrap up their brief series tonight in Ba, with the Phoenix Premiers and Fiji Under 23 teams also in action again.
