The King of Tonga, Tupou VI, spoke of the need for more transparency in government during his address at the opening of the Legislative Assembly yesterday.
He highlighted the measures the Pohiva government is planning as part of its attempts to correct the country's dire financial state.
This will include efforts to curb poverty, support the private sector, more social welfare spending and development in the education sector.
Radio Tonga reports the speech also touched on the need to improve disaster preparedness and to foster greater energy efficiency.
The King also told the House of the country's need to be ready to host the Pacific Games in 2019, and the preparatory work needed on infrastructure, communications and transportation.
