The electoral commissioner in the Papua New Guinea region of Bougainville has shut down polling stations for people voting outside their constituencies after reports of abuse.

The special polling places were due to stay in operation until 4pm on Wednesday.

The acting electoral commissioner, George Manu, says it appears the facility has been abused.

He says he has reliable reports from officials that people using the special polling places had attempted to vote more than once and of some people trying to remove the indelible ink that marks someone who has already voted.

Mr Manu says he will ask the police to investigate the reports of multiple voting.
