The head of Papua New Guinea's Pacific Games team says the construction of venues in Port Moresby has presented a challenge for local athletes.

The majority of venues are expected to be handed over to Games organisers at the end of this month, although some, like the athletics track, will take longer.

Team PNG Chef de Mission Richard Kassman says it's not an ideal situation for local athletes who are preparing for the Games, but says they are managing as best they can.

"We knew this, we know this and we've got to make best on the school grounds that we participate in [and] on different field and courts and pools that we work in. We've really drilled this into our athletes, coaches and managers and accepted the fact that we're not going to have six months of testing out our own brand-spaning-new facilities. And our performances at region events - our athletes are performing well and performing to expectation but, yeah, sure, it would be great if we had more time on our own facilities."

Richard Kassman says he has been hassling the venues committee and as soon as venues are ready, PNG's athletes will be in there to test them out.
