Easier NZ Pacific pensions closer

It will soon be easier for Cook Islands, Niuean and Tokelau retirees to access their New Zealand superannuation.

The New Zealand Social Development Minister Anne Tolley says the Superannuation and the Veteran's Pension Bill has now passed its second reading.

She says it will mean people will be able to depart New Zealand to live in those island nations after the age of 55 and then apply for their super once they turn 65.

Under the present arrangement they qualify for the super under the Special Portability rules but this requires that they are 'resident and present' in New Zealand when they apply.

Ms Tolley says the changes are aimed at helping to reverse the depopulation which has plagued these countries.

She says to qualify people must still have been 'resident and present' in New Zealand for 10 years since the age of 20 - including five years since the age of 50.
